Any tips for finding a long term rental in Veliko Tarnovo please?

davidg12345

Hey all,

I'm about to start looking for a long term rental in VT.

Ideally I'd find something in a smaller village in the VT municipality, but failing that I'll look for a place in the town.

I'm looking to spend around 300 - 350 Euro max per month. I don't mind if the place is small, eg. apartment, larger studio etc.

Just wondering if anyone has tips about the best way to look / find a place, and any gotchas or scams I should be on the look out for? Eg. How to avoid getting overcharged as a foreigner. Also, are there any areas of VT that are better to avoid due to safety or other issues?

I have Bulgarian friends who might be able to help me look on non-English sites.

Many thanks in advance for any replies!

VT does have several good local estate agents who handle rentals as well as sales. I'm not sure there will be much available in villages with agents, but it's worth looking. Imot.bg and olx.bg are Bulgarian language sites that also have properties direct from owners and may offer more choices outside the city.

... plus Alo (dot bg) and BulgarianProperties (dot com).

VT is small and touristy, I doubt you need to worry much about crime/safety.

Thank you both!

@Jane, are there any agents you recommend specifically in VT?

David, of the English-speaking agencies, Century Homes (or CityRent, which is part of the same business) is one offering rentals  I have heard other forum members speak highly of.  They may have the best selection.

Yantra Homes only have one house at a higher rent available right now. Mirela have an apartment in your price range in Kilifarevo, a little town not far from VT. Bulgarian Properties covers the entire country and may have something available.

Or if you have friends who can help you with the Bulgarian language sites and negotiating direct with owners, the ones mentioned earlier in the thread may work for you.

Good luck! You'd be wise to try to find somewhere ASAP as rental prices will go up over the summer. VT does get quite an influx then.

Thanks very much Jane, really appreciate it!

You aren't kidding! I've visited VT twice (a glutton for punishment, I guess 😎) - it's picturesque but I found it terribly touristy, tacky and tedious, if you'll excuse the alliteration. The restaurants were at best so-so, even by BG standards, and there was no vibrancy to the place at all. Finding parking in the upper part of town is a nightmare at any time of year but a real killer in the summer.

On the plus side - it's a nirvana for those who collect mass-produced tourist knick-knacks or Chinese-made Kiss-Me-Quick faux-Crusader helmets and plastic swords....😁

Imagine Skeggie with a hill but no sea, saucy postcards or rock/candy-floss stalls and you've got the picture!

Went into vt couple weeks ago to visit fortress with family who were visiting.

There was some running event on, took ages find parking which is free on weekends and most places after 5 during week.

Some decent restaurants and a nice cafe that mainly does cakes ( usually sit in for coffee and piece of cake ).

Does get very busy in summer but driving not too bad, compared to Bucharest which is horrendous for traffic all year, try not to fly to/from there again.

@JimJ

Goodness me! I've visited VT numerous times, though not for a couple of years and only ever in the spring and autumn, not the summer, so my experience of the city was very different. I found it pleasant and interesting. We didn't attempt to take a car and park, though, parking is a big problem all year round.

But dang, I missed out! I really wanted a plastic faux-Crusader helmet and matching sword set, too, for when I visit those Roman ruins north-east of VT near Byala that were "restored" with styrofoam blocks! Maybe I can get a set on Temu?

Lol, not seen them ruins yet, Nikopolis ruins near Nikyup went last year where they do enactments, very little restoring done.

Wive had great time, slipped and broke ankle, 3 months no weight on it during summer, don't think she'll be going this year.

janemulberry

Oh no! No, it sounds best avoided after that experience!

I knew I could rely on you! I rather fancy the Oathkeeper. And what a bargain for 6.64 BGN!
