Council Tax Shocker

Mrs Homemaker

Hello folksies

I've just learned that within Oryahovo Municipality this year's council tax has risen by 300%

Is anyone else in this region or any other region in Bulgaria experiencing this scale of increase ?

This is extremely disturbing

I think there's been discussion about this last month when the council tax bills went out. Some areas have raised the fees significantly.

could have something to do with refuse collection, the EU has told Bulgaria their prices for refuse collection is to low it cost more to collect it then the revenue they receive..

That said if mine goes up by that amount it will still only be 57 lv a year

In live in veliko turnovo municipality, near polski trambesh.

Our tax went up approx 15% so we seem to have got off lightly compared to others.

Empty (and second?) properties in England are attracting a 300% rate of Council Tax in many areas. THAT is my idea of a "shocker": three times very little, as in Bulgaria, is just a drop in the ocean, and it means that municipalities can get on with the road and other infrastructure repairs that they've had to hold off on for many years (apart from fixing a few potholes when voting time comes round again...)

I can tell you that the Municipal Tax here in Sofia would make you village bumpkins cry into your rakiya, though!

janemulberry

True. A 300% increase on our village house tax would still be a tiny fraction of the council tax on our UK house.

In the UK my council tax was over 140 pounds a month. The garage I rented cost more in a month than my council tax here costs me for a year.

300% seems pretty unlikely. Folks would be squealing pretty loudly if that were the case! Did you see your own bill yet?

I've got property tax bills in Bansko, Razlog, Plovdiv and Kazanlak... and none showed those kinds of rises, maybe 20% ish instead.

But, yes, property tax (and especially the garbage collection charge) is rather low here. It might well be that more substantial rises are on the way in the next couple of years.

Mrs Homemaker

Oops turns out it's not that much after all.

Mrs Homemaker

@janemulberry

仄儭Well if you put it like that

Mrs Homemaker

@Kath948381

Now that is shocking

Mrs Homemaker

@JimJ

There's a thought , what are the council taxes like in Sofia then?

@JimJ

Second homes in England and Wales are now going to be double the council tax.

In Austria I pay 400 a month, it includes my council tax, water, garbage, our outside lights and maintenance kitty. So if I want anything doing to the house we just go into our house fund.

JimJ

@Mrs Homemaker

Compared to the UK, they're derisory - this year we paid 580 leva; last year it was 396.

Not if you're smart, they aren't! Just "put it on the market" and you only pay the normal rate...

There are ways around everything. Like inheritance tax.

Kath948381

Yes another reason why I live here in Bulgaria because here I can live within my means.

Yeah - just live forever...

Except that in many areas of the UK, that only works for the first three months the house is on the market!

gwynj

@Mrs Homemaker

Ah, panic over. :-) If not 300%, what was the actual increase?
