Hello Slin1953,

Let us wait for a member to shed light on this. The Dominican Republic forum is quite active; you should receive a response shortly.😉

My understanding is that it's all done in Santo Domingo.

This is why we recommend using a good lawyer.

I'm confused btmu your question about an "emigration officer."

If you mean someone at the US Embassy -- no such animal exists, the Embsssy has no role in the DR application for naturalization.

>> Except maybe to do some certifications for your docs, maybe.

>> But I don't think even that applies, as US apostilles are done by either the State Dept or State-level Secretaries of State (depending on the documents).

If you've not

Sorry, I did something wrong with that previous post.  Here the real one:

@Slin1953

First, please provide a little more info about your situation.  You say you have a visa..but which program (retirement, investment, whatever) are you applying under?  Are you  going for temp or permanent residency?

Second, I'm confused by your question about an "emigration officer."

If you mean someone at the US Embassy -- no such animal exists, the Embsssy has no role in the DR application for naturalization.

>> Except maybe to do some certifications or Apostilles for your docs, if you already live here.

>> But most US apostilles are done by either the State Dept or State-level Secretaries of State (depending on the documents).

If you've not done Apostilles for key documents, your docs aren't  ready.

If your question is about where to deliver the paperwork to within the DR government, that would be the main office of the Migracion Directorate.

>> If you're taking in yourself, you should really know your Español.  Many folks hire translators or law staff to assist.

>> Be prepared for LOOONG waits.  We've been in the ministry for as little as 30 minutes (a great day), but we've also  been there 3-4 hours (a miserable, humid day).  Extra phone battery, reading material, maybe a seat cushion for those very special torture devices disguised as plastic chairs.

>> many folks bring lunch, water/soda & snacks.  Though you can also buy onsite, in the basement, it is expensive and the food low quality & not diabetic friendly.

>> ALSO -- APPROPRIATE ATTIRE.  Many posts on that.  Dress respectfully -- a few folks have veen turned away, refused pictures,  etc.  Even if not turned away, you might be wondering why all the clerks are giving you the evil eye, providing slow service, etc. -- you must show respect to be given respect.  It's nothing hard, just gotta do it.

Like planner suggests, well worth hiring a GOOD lawyer (abrogado or abrograda).  Don't skimp with a cheap lawyer, they are cheap for a reason.  Lots of posts about lawyers on the forum-- do a search.

Best of luck to you.  You'll get there.
