Required CPF to purchase online

jasonlovesdogs

Hello,

Why do is it required to provide a CPF to purchase anything online? Where does that information go? Does Receita Federal get sent a copy of all your purchases? If so, what do they do with it? Can RF look up and have access to all your purchases? For example, they ask for it in grocery stores but its option to give it.

Yes, you guessed right.

In Brasil you are also often asked to punch in your CPF on a keypad for over the counter purchases, and on all returns/exchanges as well.

I usually pull the "I'm a gringo and I don't have one" line.....which is a lie, I have had one for years. On a large purchase this won't work though.

Expenditures are probably cross referenced to income declarations in the case of large transactions. If you buy a Lambo yet work as a frenchista in a shoe store, a red light starts flashing somewhere.

Ha Ha. Yes, they ask for it all the time but I say no for in-person transactions and they never say it's required unless, like you said, its a big purchase. But I've always have to enter for online purchases or it won't process. At least so far.
