Spanish to Portugese?

lunamick

I live between Colombia and Costa Rica,

I am a native English speaker and almost fluent in Spanish

I hate to learn a new Language but Brazil intrigues me and i am bored in CR

We used to have neighbors in Fl that only spoke Portuguese

Spanish flowed much easier than English

Can i use Spanish there?

I guess i need to visit

09/23/23 @lunamick. Welcome. For a brief tourist visit in a major city, you'll be able to get by with a mix of Spanish and English. To really get to know the country or to stay for any length of time, you'll need to pick up at least basic conversational Portuguese. It's that different.

@lunamick There are a lot of Argentinian tourists in Brazil. l am assuming they are getting by with Spanish. But as AB says if you truly want to get around you will need to learn Portuguese. Once you get even a little out of the tourist areas its a must

I have sat in on many meetings between Portuguese and Spanish speakers. With a bit of work, they managed to understand one another ok....

I speak Spanish, and my level of Portuguese is really basic. I didn't have much trouble communicating with people here, even when I mix Portuguese and Spanish in sentences. So if you are just visiting here, it shouldn't be an issue.

@lunamick Portugese is a very difficult language maybe learn a few phrases will help?

roddiesho

@lunamick It depends on where you are. I live in a small village of 2,500 in the North East. In my village as well as the larger neighboring city, I am the only American. In fact if I do not say anything no one knows I am Not Brazilian. There is a good chunk of the population that has not heard anything besides Portuguese.

Most of the good advice given is for Major Cities, Major Airports, Hotels etc.

I think the person who said learn at least a few phrases etc. was correct. It is a VERY LARGE country. You cannot count on being in a bilingual situation even in the Major Cities.
