Moving to Spain with a drink drive conviction

clairembb

Hi we are looking into moving to Spain or at least looking at our different visa options. But I have recently, 2022, been convicted of a drink driving offence (please don鈥檛 judge) is this likely to cause problems? Thanks in advance for any help

Hello,聽 if you are not an EU citizen, most visas in Spain require a blank criminal record certificate in the country of origin

Yes I鈥檝e seen that online it states 5 years without any criminal convictions but I I also read some

info that stated they only look at terrorism, drugs, etc. we鈥檙e still desperate to move and don鈥檛 know whether to apply for a visa and hope we get a chance to state our case! 1f623.svg

Hi Claire

i am sorry for you. My non lucrative visa was denied due to a drink drive conviction 11 years ago. It could be worth applying and adding a letter in Spanish explaining what happened. I鈥檓 now applying for a student visa, costing thousands of pounds in language school fees, as they take a more lenient view if your plan is only to stay for one year. Although this can subsequently be extended.

I am a UK citizen and have a DUI that includes driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. I have applied for my Irish citizenship so I will be an EU citizen, will this affect my chances of residing in Spain long term? For example, Will i have a problem applying for the certificate of registration?

If you're an EU citizen, it's straightforward to relocate anywhere in the EU for any reason (thanks to Freedom of Movement).

The EU Citizen Registration requires an address, funds, and health insurance... but not a criminal record check.

You can book an appointment online at your nearest immigration office, and it confirms the requirements.
