Suburban Lisbon!

Hi guys!聽 I have been reading this forum for a while but as I'm heading to PT in Feb I would like to pick your brains on a specific matter.

My wife and I (plus our baby girl) plan to move to Lisbon in the next 12 months.聽 We have previously been to Lisbon several times both for work and play so are familiar with the central area (and love it obvs.)聽

We have however been living in busy areas of London for many years now and would like to live somewhere quieter, more suburban (never thought I would say that!)聽 We are location independent, that is we both work from home, although we would like a shortish trip into the city/airport.聽 Also although not a deal-breaker it would be nice to be nearish to the sea!聽

We are coming to Lisbon in Feb for a few days and would like to spend a day or two looking round potential suburbs.聽 We plan to go to Oeiras/Caxais but any other suggestions would be gratefully received.聽 Thanks!

Hi.

It really depends on what you mean with "shortish trip into the city/airport".聽 Cascais is by far the most popular place for people living outside Lisbon but willing to spend up to one hour commuting to the city each day (car is the most popular way to do it but train is also available).聽 This is specially true for families with kids as Cascais is really quiet (except the center that is full with people, mostly tourists) and by the water. Downside is current housing prices.

Oeiras is a good alternative, closer to Lisbon and with more affordable prices. I would leave Caxias out of the picture as there are nicer alternatives such as Queijas (my favorite) or Linda-a-Velha. For perspective, from Queijas you take 10 minutes to reach the city center and聽 15 minutes to the airport without traffic. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any other question.

Cheers JMSP- you're reply was particularly well timed as I was in Lisbon and heading west to Cascais the following day through most of those areas.

You were right about Caxais, apart from proximity to the station/sea it's not much to write home about.聽 And I didn't manage to get to Quijas/Linda-a-Velha but a quick look on Street View they seem pleasant- I think I will target this sort of area when I come to my house search.
