NHR and Income in UAE

port22

Hi,

Would anyone be able to help with how the tax treatment will be for my income in Dubai, UAE under the NHR scheme in Portugal? Will that be considered as income outside Portugal and therefore will not be taxed here?

Any help will be appreciated. If you know a good NHR / tax consultant, who can help me figure this out, would be helpful too.

Thank you.

Hi @port22,

If you are a tax resident in Portugal (i.e. you stay for at least 6 months + 1 day), you must declare all your income, including that obtained abroad.

Hi Johnny,

Thanks for the quick revert. I am a resident and I'll obviously declare all my income. But I believe foreign source income is not taxed in Portugal. In that case, my income in Dubai will get taxed here or not?

Zedsh

I'm in a similar situation and wondering what's the case here

All your income must be declared in the yearly tax statement. As you are an NHR, the tax rates applied to an NHR will be automaticaly taken into account in your tax return.

As usual 1f600.svg JohnnyPT is correct. I am in a similar situation. Just declare your income from Dubai. Like all other foreign income it should be taxed in line with your NHT status. Naturally, you should not forget to add the Annex for the NHT status to your declaration.

Thank you all.

  1. I just became a resident here, is the tax on foreign income to be paid on a quarterly basis or at the end of the year?
  2. Any recommendation for tax lawyer, who can provide advice on how the foreign sourced income, from certain jurisdictions, will get taxed under NHR?

JohnnyPT

1. Income tax (IRS) is paid all at once, after it has been settled by AT Finanças. So it can vary between May and August. This varies for each taxpayer.

2. Do some market research on the list of lawyers. You can email them in english to ask if they deal with these services.

You worldwide income will be taxed in Portugal at the rate that applies to you, which depends upon whether or not you can avail the NHT regime for you. It is really very simple.

So it's easier to give up your NHR status then. I am in a similar situation with a position offered in Saudi Arabia while wife and kids stay in PT. If I give up my NHR status, would I be able to re-apply for NHR in the future? I've only lived in Portugal for one year. The alternative is sending them back to our home country.

JohnnyPT

If you give up your NHR regime, you can re-apply again, but five years later.
