Celebrating American holidays?

mbarnold

Hi everyone,

I've been living in Iceland for 2 years now with my Icelandic wife and our 3 year old daughter, and one thing that we are having a harder time adjusting with than we thought was celebrating American holidays. We both want to raise our family with both Icelandic and American traditions, but celebrating the 4th of July, Halloween, etc. just isn't the same with just the three of us. Are there any groups of people that have been getting together for American celebrations? Or is anybody interested in starting one?

All the best,
Matt

the US embassy generally has a picnic on the 4th at the botanical garden. It's not going to be the same given that there are no fireworks and the weather's all wrong, but it's the only event I know of.

Halloween has its replacement with Oskudagur (costumes, candy) and the few thanksgiving events I've been to are privately organized.

There's an Americans in Iceland group on fb that might have others interested in planning events though!

Thank you for the reply. I didn't know about the facebook group or the US embassy's picnic, thanks!
