Moving to DR with my dog

Guest37

Hello!
I am moving to the DR in late October and I have a 75lb dog that will be coming with me.  However I am having a hard time finding an airline that is accepting dogs in the cargo.  I'm not sure what other options are available to me.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance!

I am in the United States and yes transporting a big dog seems to be a problem.  Any suggestions?

Also understand once here the dog  cannot return to the USA anytime soon. They are banned by the CDC apparently

The Americans that I know used to use a Cdn airline -
if you're close to a border.

But Cdn flights are only PUJ these days (Punta  Cana)

Thats ok, once I am there I dont plan on leaving ;)

Guest37

Thank you for the info, I will check on that and let you know what I found out.

Guest37

So Sorry but what is a CDn flight?

We just brought our dog and cat to the DR two weeks ago on a permanent basis but they flew as carry on. 75 pounds is a little big to stuff under the seat :)  The airlines are very strict about flying animals cargo. If any airport the animal travels through is under or over a certain temperature, they can't fly. American Airlines and a few others are not flying pets at all right now even in-cabin (we flew Delta).   If you have any questions on the documentation once you find a carrier, please contact me.

Check with American Airlines Cargo - same flights, separate company! We flew our dog in last December from Miami. At that time, the only aircraft AA was flying into SDQ did not allow for live animals in cargo, so we had to fly into Santiago.

It's going to be difficult on any commercial carrier. Most airlines will not fly snub-nosed/brachycephalic breeds, including pit bulls.

I found this article with options, but one of the ones they list, Amerijet, now shows on their website that they do NOT allow snub-nosed breeds.

Reina - you seem to keep posting the same question. Are you addressing those questions to particular members?

As I posted above, in response to your second of three posts, snub-nosed breeds are not allowed on any US airline.

Hello! Sorry for the delayed response.  I ended up using a pet transporter to get my pitbull here. They used Avianca Cargo airlines. I would recommend checking with the airline first and you might be able to go directly through them. They have a cargo division which is not the same as the commercial passenger flights. Otherwise there are several transporters you can check with that will fly pet's internationally depending on your location in the US or Canada. Hope that helps!

Thank you. I appreciate your quick response.

Reina welcome to the forums!  To explain - all of us here volunteer our time and information to help others.  Please don't expect immediate answers honey.  We are not all online all the time.   :D

Reina La Jefa

I didn't "expect" anything. Never insinuated such...
Thank you for volunteering your time.
