Teaching in La Romano, DR.

tanyaohareps

I have been offered a job in La Romano in a private School which includes accommodation. I am wondering has anyone lived in the area or worked in the Schools there that can give me any tips or insights into life there. For example medical, quality of life, transportation, shopping etc.

First welcome to the forums. You will find a lot of the information you seek on the various threads.  Things like insurance apply across the country.

I lived in La Romana for 2 years.  I liked it.  It's a smallish city with all the services you need. It's a bit over an hour to Santo Domingo and an hour to Punta Cana.

I think you get a real Dominican experience in La Romana unlike heavily touristed areas.  As to accommodation, transportation etc it will depend where you end up. I lived on the west side of the city near the university.

Hi Tanya,

I live in La Romana and I am familiar with 2 private schools here. Abraham Lincoln and St. Johns. They are both professional and well respected by the community. Graduates from Abe Lincoln are able to attend university in Canada, the U.S. and Europe. The curriculum is in English and tuition is 10 K per year. I think St. Johns go's up to grade 8 but I could be wrong.

I have seen the accommodation for the teaching staff at Abe Lincoln. 2 bedroom apts. next to the sea and a quiet, secure neighborhood. You have access to all the modern amenities that a city of 140,000 people would offer. I live in Buenavista Norte which is a neighborhood very close to these schools. There is an int'l airport in La Romana and the Punta Cana Int'l airport is a 50 minute drive. We also have a cruise ship terminal.

I work in Casa de Campo which is a 7000 acre compound next to La Romana. I would recommend you request an annual pass from your employer to ensure you have access to this world class resort community.

It has the largest marina in the Caribbean with plenty of shopping and dining options. It also has Altos d' Chavon, a replica of a 19th century mediterranean village with a 5000 seat roman amphitheatre. Lots of entertainers perform there including Michael Buble, Ricky Martin and many Latin entertainers. Minitas Beach is the jewel of this community on the calm Caribbean Sea.
