Vietnamese cannot apply for work permit?

Tierney Chau

Hi, everyone!

I'm Vietnamese, moved to Singapore when I was 4 years old after I finished P6, our family moved back to Vietnam as my dad have some business there but after 4 years we moved back to Singapore and make a discussion to settle here for good as I reach the age of 17 and I was sponsored by my Singaporean stepdad to live here on a family-sponsored pass (LTVP) for a good 3 years until we decided to apply for PR before I turned 21 as per ICA requirements. They asked for a lot of information such as the individual’s family ties to Singaporeans, economic contributions, qualifications, age, family profile, and length of residency, to assess the applicant’s ability to contribute to Singapore and integrate into the society, as well commitment to sinking roots here. I got high expectations for my result to be approved as I had been here since the age of 4, attended the local school, my dad and brother are Singaporean, my mom is a PR and I'm a regular blood donor so I didn't expect my application result to be rejected without any stated reasons after a long process of 1year 9month and now they are unable to sponsor me the family pass anymore as I'm considered an independent adult (21) and I have no choice but to apply for a work permit to continue to live and work here. While I'm looking for a service crew position job to apply for work permit, I was told by the employers that they are unable to get me a permit as MOM does not grant a Work Permit for Vietnamese workers and Vietnamese cannot work at any service industry cuz MOM has specified that service industry can only get foreign workers from approved-source-country and Vietnam is not included so my only choice now is spass but it's so hard to find employers that can apply for me as they said that spass is very hard to apply because of the tighter foreign worker policy announced in Budget 2022 so now they have very limited quota that can apply for spass. I have been applying and looking for jobs and all my applications came back with no quota so I don't know what else to do now I don't wanna leave the country, all my family is here.

There are "approved-source-country" rules for certain professions, but it is beyond my knowledge (and probably anyone else's on this forum) what the details of them are - ask insiders in these industries, or MoM directly!

If you cannot secure a work pass or other long-term visa by the time your current LTVP expires, you must leave Singapore (and continue your attempts from abroad), as hard as this might be.

Good luck!

Hi,

Some of my Vietnamese friends can have WP to work in some fields, like IT or E-commerce.

@beppi hi there my ltvp had expired for over a year already and I'm still here on a visit pass sponsored by my family. But the thing is I cannot work using the current pass that im on, as a vietnamese that wants to work in service sector. My only choice is spass.

@Hanah141102 hi there as im don’t have any relevant experiences and all the companies need like some kind of work experiences that that match their requirements. So service is the way to go for me!:(

How did you manage to stay for a year on a visit pass (STVP)?!? These are usually limited to three months - at most, as the second 30 days extension is extremely difficult to get. The only exemptions (i.e. permissions to stay longer) that I know of are on medical grounds ("unfit to travel") or during the travel restrictions of the COVID phase (no flights available).

If you in fact overstayed or did any other dubious immigration deal, you may be banned already and might have to say goodbye to working or living in Singapore.

Ica extended my visit pass while i was waiting for my pr result as my ltvp expired but the pr got rejected last month with no apparent reason. So for now i have 2 months to find a job before it expires. Yeah it’s totally understandable that you said that.

I hope you have had some luck with your attempts to get a permit.

I am here in Singapore assisting my girlfriend in getting through this web as well. She is on a 3 month work permit doing domestic duties and applying for another workpermit. I am attemptin to assist but my Viet is very limited and her english limited as well. I will be leaving Singapore next week and really need for us to speak to somebody to clarify some of the issues. I am very fearful that she is being exploited. We have managed to thwart the attempts so far but the current employer is making many absoultly ludercrious demands. I have spoken to HOME and they are very helpful. MOM are almost impossible to talk with especially from Australia. My girlfriend is afaid that by talking to them it could jepordise her permit application. I know this is outside the scope of this forum but I would be interested to meet a person who is fluent in English and Viet that knows the visa and workpermit requirements. I have been looking at translators but they are more high level govt approved and was now going to try some language schools. Some cultural concepts do not translate well using the online translators and I end up totally confused (i.e Sister Uncle Boss Manager Mistress Visa Workpermit). If you know of any resources/translators or would be willing to facilitate a meeting that would be very helpful.

@duggin Maybe it is time to realize that wanting to settle in Singapore without speaking English (or one of the other official languages) is not a good idea.

She can return to Vietnam, take English classes there and try again in a few years. Or choose another country with easier immigration rules (there are not many!).
