Puddman

Fellow °µÍø½ûÇøs,

I haven’t been online for some time now, but I just returned from my home country of Canada, What a road trip, and how much has changed there since I was last there in 2014. I felt like a foreigner in my home country.

has anybody else had the same experience?

We are not Canadian but we drove across Canada last year and it was great. Went from Las Vegas up to Alberta and drove across to Quebec then up and thru Labrador and over and across Newfoundland and back to Vegas.  Had a great time and found some beautiful golf courses in remote areas.  9000 mile trip and worth every penny of it.

Lotus Eater asked . . . . I wonder how many Americans will be vacationing in Canada this year..

With the exchange rate $1 USD equals $1.39 Canadian I think everything is as usual. The real question is how many Canadians will visit the US.

I had lived on a border town and many of our family friends had cottages at Crystal Beach which we would visit often during the summer. As a teenager I would cut school and go to Ft. Erie race track. Also that that time period I would buy firecrackers legal in Canada but not in the states where I lived and sell them.

Later in life after I moved away and coming back to visit my mother I would buy aspirins with codeine (no prescription necessary) for my Mothers arthritis.

Also at the duty free shops in Niagara Falls you could buy cigarettes for $10 a carton and Havana cigars which they reminded me they were illegal. You would pay inside and collect your purchase at a drive in window. The exit led straight to the Rainbow bridge on ramp.

Summary

  1. Casualties taken to multiple hospitals, exact numbers not yet known
  2. Police 'confident' was not an act of terrorism
  3. Driver, 30, arrested at the scene, was 'known' to police
  4. Incident happened where Filipino community festival taking place
  5. Canada to hold federal election on Monday

VANCOUVER, April 26 (Reuters) - A number of people were killed and multiple others were injured in Vancouver after a vehicle drove into a crowd at a Filipino street festival in the western Canadian city, police said on Saturday.

Police said they were investigating a mass casualty incident and had arrested a 30-year-old Vancouver man at the scene, but did not immediately give the number of fatalities or injured, saying they would have more information in the morning.

"At this time, we are confident that this incident was not an act of terrorism," Vancouver police said in an X post.

At a midnight press conference, police said that the suspect was "known" to them but did not elaborate. The man was initially taken into custody by people at the scene.

"There was a number of deceased, a number also injured. It would be unfair for me to speculate on exact numbers as the victims were taken to multiple hospitals in the region," said Vancouver interim police chief Steve Rai.

The incident happened shortly after 8 p.m. (0300 GMT) near East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street, where the Lapu Lapu Day Block Party, celebrating a Philippine national hero, was taking place

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said on X: "I am devastated to hear about the horrific events at the Lapu Lapu festival in Vancouver earlier this evening."

Vancouver's Mayor Ken Sim and British Columbia Premier David Eby posted similar comments on X.

One witness told CTV News he saw a black vehicle driving erratically in the area of the festival just before the crowd was struck.

'HORRIFIC'

Jagmeet Singh, leader of Canada's New Democratic Party, was among the attendees at the event, but left minutes before the vehicle arrived, CTV News said.

"This is so horrific, I don't even know what to say," CTV quoted Singh as saying. "I was just there, and I just imagine the faces of the kids that I saw smiling and dancing."

Canada's federal election takes place on Monday.

Another witness, who did not wish to be identified, said he had seen about 15 people lying on the ground after the dark SUV plunged into the crowd. The witness said the driver had tried to run but was chased down by festival-goers and held against a fence for about 10 minutes until police arrived.

Vancouver city councillor Peter Fry told CTV News he had also been at the event earlier in the day.

"This was a great day. A wonderful event. Huge community event. And to have it end in tragedy like this, it won't break us or the community but it's horrible," he said.

The Vancouver Sun said thousands of people had been in the area.

"I didn’t get to see the driver, all I heard was an engine rev," Yoseb Vardeh, co-owner of food truck Bao Buns, said in an interview with Postmedia.

"I got outside my food truck, I looked down the road and there’s just bodies everywhere,†said Vardeh, as his voice broke.

"He went through the whole block, he went straight down the middle."

Being from Wisconsin I doubt there will be much change in US tourism. Americans and Canadians don't speak politically with or about each other very much. You might see some Canadian malcontence on the forums from mostly anti-trumpers. Canada is great for RVing, fishing, camping and tourism at some sites. Except for Quebec, when you travel there, the appearances around you are no different than in the USA. It is virtually the same. With all due respect, in that sense it is almost like another US State. But I wouldn't make any drama from it.

Canada's big problems are internal and have nothing to do with Trump trolling them on 51st or 25% tariffs. Right now, there is a Federal election. If the liberal party wins, Alberta and Quebec most likely will vote to secede into independent countries and that will be the end of Canada. After Alberta comes Saskatchewan, and after Quebec the maritimes join them. So we have liberal Ontario, Manitoba abd BC (Canada's California), all split up into who knows what. Worst, all indications are that the liberal party will likely win. Some of the seceding provinces may join the USA after gaining independence and there reportedly are discussions and negotiations on that topic in DC.

So,this is much more than ill-will to US tourists which is nothing but a distraction from the liberal party trying to stir up anti-American controversy, to get popular domestic support, to win an election. That may be succeeding too.

Canada must be prepared to bid Alberta goodbye and Quebec adieu because Clark will probably win and, in the process, split up 'O Canada'. That is Trudeau's liberal party legacy is Canada's apparent former dictator.
