Short term car rental

IlyaH

I was wondering if you guys/gals have any advice on how to get an affordable rental car solution. My wife and I (and our two young kids) are coming to Malaysia in January, just to relive our past years (we used to live in KL for 4 years a while back). After our time in KL we moved back to The Netherlands, settled back here and got two daughters (now 2 and 4 yo). We already found suitable accommodation through Airbnb (think that is a good route since it's for two months only).

I would like to rent a car but rental companies charge a hefty monthly fee, so I was wondering if there are any cheaper solutions? Maybe some sort of car sharing if this exists in KL? Other suggestions are much welcome too :).

Think you may have an issue with getting child seats for a car during short rental times.

Grab is still one of the better options for getting around within the Klang Valley and since you lived in Malaysia several LRT/MRT routes have opened to improve connectivity. So public transport is now quite a good option combined with Grab for the last short distances to destination.

IlyaH

Yeah. Looking for a place near LRT/MRT, but still fancy a car for easy access (and especially being able to drive outside to PJ etc for foodcourt dinners and such). Car is #1 priority as usual in KL :).

Got the Grab & Uber app ready :). Not sure if we will use this often, but yeah...always good to have :)

Anyway. Will check out GoCar. The monthly option sounds interesting. Thanks for the advice ):.

As for the child seats. We will be bringing two booster seats. Or perhaps a 2nd hand car seat from here (NL, where those things are cheap 2nd hand). Most airlines aren't fussy about those things...

No Uber now but some other shared ride companies filling the gap. I have found in certain locations the GPS makes it difficult to arrange a pick-up and the drivers cancel the ride when faced with one-way streets and delays - so take the easy option to schedule another ride.

You can rent from the well known companies like Hertz:

You can also rent from private people on mudah.my

Question is, who is responsible for maintenance, breakdown, accidents and theft? A well known company will have a contract and available insurance too, whereas a private person has nothing to offer and youd would be responsible for everything. Insurance is likely to cost more than the rental and you wouldnt want to be without it even if you were an experienced driver here.

Yeah, private rental isn't really my thing no. Not the best option in terms of liability. Rather rent through a company. However, I was hoping to get a good monthly price, but it seems most rental companies simply give a small discount on their daily prices. In other words, it seems like the margins aren't that big on rental cars in KL. I am in touch with GoCar right now btw, they seem a good choice.

Is go car a rental car company?

Read the thread for details. They are given further back in the discussion.
