Stray dogs are everywhere. They're generally not aggressive. But I have seen the occasional scooter get chased.

@SafferCA Thanks . This situation sucks and it s a problem that i ve found in a lots of countries and it seems like nobody is really aware of it.

Welcome.

The situation is not as bad as in some countries, and lots of people are aware of it and some organisations are trying their best to solve it. However, this needs some political will and push to make a difference. It does not seem to be at the forefront of 'problems that need to be sorted'. When you do visit Mauritius you could also contact those organisations and possibly help.

You mention you have experience in other countries -- what do you do to keep yourself safe when cycling there?

On a slightly separate note, if you do wish to see the country safely, I would suggest you hire a scooter or motorbike.

Best wishes.

IMpo SibLe

@Tookays Thanks. I mean sure the countries and politicians and organisations are aware of the problem but i don t know if they really understand the whole situation, i mean the degree of degradation , the noise, the deterioration in coexistence between neighbors, the mistreatment of dogs, the danger for motorcyclists, children, and people in general, the loss of money in tourist sites. And this is happenning  all over the world from india, to peru or in any city in the USA. And if you re a bike rider o bycicle rider yu can be in the middle of nowhere and suddenly be chased by a group of dogs .I mean it s like 200 years ago when people were afraid of packs of wolves and they can only be safe in the center of their towns.

i ve tried few ultrasounds devices when i m riding but doesn t work and that it s not the soluton.

For me the worst is that this problem is caused mosty by dog lovers who abandoned thei dgs in some point.

Anyway, thanks for your feedback.

I have lived in a few countries. The problem in Mauritius is certainly not as bad as in some others. Visit India if you wish to see animals on the roads.

Dogs will chase at some point. However, the strays in Mauritius try to keep away from people in general. In fact, there are many local people who look after them upto a point, bringing them food regularly, eg, the dogs on Flic-en-Flac beach are all looked after and do not 'attack' people.

You are right that there has to be s better solution. Education about dogs, and change in attitude to pets/animals is required. Who will do that? In any case, I would not judge a country simply because it has stray animals.

If you want to cycle without being chased by dogs, the UK is safe.

Best wishes.

IMpo SibLe

@Tookays Thank you. I agree with you. Going to the UK? Maybe one day when they make the sun grow. 😅

Hello and welcome !

Stray dogs, specially in regards to transport is not really an issue.

However, there's an escalation of road accidents due to several reasons (careless driving, alcohol, drugs). Please be careful should you choose a bicycle (or any other vehicles) really, as means of transport. Humans are more dangerous than these occasional poor strays you might or might not encounter.

Have a safe stay

Stray dogs in Mauritius is a real problem, unfortunately.  As much as some would say they're not aggressive and will generally just bark, this is not the case.  My son jogs every morning and was charged and bitten by two dogs along the Flic en Flac beach a couple of weeks ago, needed to go for a tetanus injection and to have the wound cleaned and dressed.  Sadly, hubby and I have stopped cycling as he too was charged by a pack of dogs.  Not to mention the dog poop that spoils our walks in the mornings!   I believe more needs to be done.

@manleydawn Like most people do i could think that they are just dogs and it s not a big deal. I could life my daily life in my apartment and just move arround my  confortable neigborhood. Maybe buy a car instead of riding a bike or a bicycle or a horse etc. But this is not the point. i want to be in a place that i can move freely , go everywhere without having to be chased by a pack of dogs who someone abandoned because he thinks  that is nice that they can live freely. Of cause everybody has their own priorities to move somewhere, maybe the prices, the weather, the people, the language… i m just looking a place without a bunch of stray dogs and no regeatton everywhere.2 of the most annoying plagues nowadays. These are my priorities right now and if you don t like them…. Well, i have others 😅😅

Hello! This seems like an issue. I enjoy walking around but don’t like to encounter stray dogs. They are prone to attack people and if nothing is done about it, then the issue continues. What if the residents there contact the right authority that handles this, if there is such a thing there, Get together and try to do something about it.
