Volunteering is illegal in Kenya unless you have a work permit of sorts, or a 'Special Pass' (you would need support from the sponsoring organisation to obtain one for 3 months).聽

Unpaid work counts as work and is often seen as depriving a Kenyan of a job.聽 The other aspect which is often criticised is that volunteers show up, work for a few weeks, then disappear, so there is no continuity and local communities are left hanging.

I wouldn't recommend volunteering unofficially and 'under the radar'.

You might be able to do it with a special permit.

Hi, Work is prohibited with a Class K Permit and thew government definition of 'work' covers both paid and unpaid.聽 So if you do decide to do some unpaid work, keep it very quiet!

I am in no way condoning breaking the law here, but people will.聽 Yes if you are caught, arrest and deportation is the usual result - Kenya has a low tolerance for illegal workers, or indeed visa overstayers.
